A conversation with a shepherd may help us to understand why Jesus used sheep as a reference to people. Their behavior is much like our own. They follow other sheep. They are instinctively fearful and resist change. They are not the brightest of animals, having to be led to food and be protected from predators. While the Western shepherd herds or pushes his sheep, the Eastern shepherd leads his sheep. Jesus, who lived in the East, is often called the Good Shepherd. He is ready to lead us, protect us and meet all of our needs. All we must do is trust Him and follow. Isaiah 53:6
